Willis's Walkabouts Rather Older Picture Galleries

These are a selection of rather older galleries that have not yet been updated, but why miss out on them completely just because they are not quite as shiny as the new ones?

Mitchell Plateau Birdwatching Expedition

May 18-28, 2003

This trip is a special joint venture between Willis's Walkabouts and George Swann's Kimberley Birdwatching Tours.

This is the first section of our Mitchell Plateau No. 2 and may be done on its own or as part of the full three-week trip.

Double Expertise. Willis's Walkabouts provides the bushwalking guide. George Swan provides the birding expert.
The photo of the black grasswren at left was taken on one of our Kimberley bushwalks.

Varied landscapes. The variety of landscapes means that you will see a greater variety of birds than would be possible on many other trips.

Great scenery, great swimming. This is one of the prettiest areas in the Kimberley.

The photos speak for themselves. You get beautiful campsites, wonderful scenery and an unparalleled opportunity to observe a variety of birds in their natural habitat.

We begin with a flight from Kununurra to the Mitchell Plateau aisstrip. From the airstrip, we walk to Camp Creek which we follow down to the Mitchell River. Camp Creek passes through a number of different environments so we should see a variety of birds along the way.

The area is contains a number of rock shelters that were used by Aboriginal people over the millennia. Some of these contain paintings. We will have a look at those we pass as we continue our journey.
Every night will bring yet another excellent campsite. Every morning will bring the dawn chorus of birds and a chance to observe them as they go about their daily business. Every day will bring yet another place to stop for a refreshing swim.

This section finishes with a helicopter flight from Donkins Falls back to the Mitchell Plateau airstrip. Those continuing will be flown to a point near Mitchell Falls.

Terrain and difficulty. Some of the terrain is quite rugged. Most is not. There is a considerable amount of rock hopping on some days but there is also a considerable amount of relatively flat and easy walking.

The temperature is likely to reach the low 30's most days. Although the nighttime average minimum is 14°C, the average can be misleading. We have had overnight lows at this time of year ranging from 5°C to 23°C on a single trip. Be prepared.

Given our emphasis on birdwatching, this should be one of the least strenuous trips we offer this year.
