Kimberley & Pilbara

Durack River Explorer

June 17-30, 2018

Aerial view of the Durack River

We dreamed about this trip for years. For years we flew over the Durack en route to and from some of our other Kimberley trips. The photo above gives you a taste of what we've seen. Huge cliffs and long pools. If you have Google Earth installed, email us a request and we'll send you a Google Earth placemark which will allow you to zoom in on the junction of the Durack and its largest tributary.

Russell Willis at Durack lookout

The trip begins with an early morning drive from Kununurra to Wyndham where we board a boat to the lower reaches of the Durack River. We spend the next two weeks working our way upstream and along some of its tributaries. The photo at right shows guide Russell Willis at the first lookout over the non-tidal part of the Durack.

Durack River - easy walking

Some of the walking is flat and easy as shown at left. Some is rough and very slow, but, on our first trip we always had time for a leisurely lunch break and time to stop and enjoy the best places we found. We expect this trip to be the same.

At the end of the two weeks, we cut down to the Gibb River Road where we'll be met by our pick up vehicle.

If you're reasonably fit and interested in exploring the unknown, this trip could be your dream come true. If you want to know exactly where you're going to be and exactly what you'll be doing each day, then one of our other trips would be a better choice for you.
